Faith-Based Grief Course

You Are Not Broken. Something Powerful Happened to You.

A faith-based grief course for people who are ready to stop waiting to feel like themselves again, and start learning how to carry the love forward.

Grief is like a hurricane. You think you can endure it until it rips its way through you, destroys the world you knew, and leaves you standing in a fog.

After a hurricane, nobody looks at the damage and asks, “What is wrong with this house?” We understand that something powerful happened to it.

The same is true for you.

Understanding Grief

Nobody Prepared You
for This

Most of us were never taught how to grieve. Nobody sat us down and explained the exhaustion. The fog. The way you can be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone. The way your hand reaches for the phone to call them before your mind catches up.

So when grief overwhelms you, you assume you must be doing it wrong.

You are not doing it wrong. You are living in unfamiliar territory without a map, and you are exhausted from trying to draw one while you walk.

Here is what I hear most often from the people who come to me:

Not one of those is evidence that something is wrong with you. Every one of them is a question that has an answer. This course is where I give you the answers.

01 “I should be doing better by now.”

02 “I feel like I am losing my mind.”

03 “If I move forward, I am leaving them behind.”

04 “Everyone else has gone back to their lives and I am still here.”

05 “I do not know who I am anymore.”

Danny's Story

I Am Not Teaching You Theory

My name is Danny Couch. When my wife, Leslie, died, I had already spent five years in ministry helping other people through loss.

Nothing prepared me for the force of my own grief.

I was thirty years old. I knew all the right words and none of them worked on me. What I learned in the years that followed did not come out of a textbook. It came out of the living hells of grief, and then out of thirty-five years of sitting with people in hospital rooms, at gravesides, and across kitchen tables while they tried to understand what had happened to their lives.

Somewhere in there I stopped being a person who had a theory about grief and became a person who had a map.

That map is what this course is.

Rev. Danny Couch
“ Grief begins with the fear that love has been lost. Healing begins with the discovery that love never left.

What This Course Is

We Are Not Going to Get You Over It

Let me be plain about what this is, because I think you have been offered enough vague comfort.

We are not going to try to get you over your grief. There is no over. We are going to help you understand what grief is actually doing inside your brain, your body, your relationships, your faith, and your future, and then we are going to teach you how to carry it differently.

I am a coach, not a counselor. I do not diagnose anyone and I do not treat anyone. What I do is give you language for what is happening to you, a framework you can actually locate yourself inside, and honest company while you find your footing.

This is grief education and support, not therapy or emergency care.

The Framework

The Four Phases of Grief Are a Map, Not a Deadline

The single most common question I get is some version of “where should I be by now?”

That is the wrong question. Here is the right one: what does my grief need from me today?

The four phases give you a way to answer it.

01

Crisis, the season of surviving.

Pain is intense. Grief episodes seem non-stop. Most of your energy is spent getting through the day. What you need here is safety, rest, lowered expectations, and people who will listen without trying to fix you. Your truth in this phase: I do not have to solve my whole future today.

02

Remapping, adjusting to a changed world.

Your brain is learning how a person can be physically absent while your love and connection remain. This is where secondary losses start showing up. What you need here is language, patience, and safe ways to stay connected. Your truth in this phase: my brain and heart are remapping Time and Space while holding on to Closeness.

03

Movement, shifting forward.

Grief episodes get less frequent, energy returns, and guilt often shows up right alongside the hope. What you need here is permission to feel joy without apologizing for it. Your truth in this phase: joy does not betray love.

04

Inspired Life, living with purpose.

Grief and love become integrated into who you are becoming. Your wounds start producing wisdom, compassion, and purpose. What you need here is balance, and continued permission to grieve when grief returns. Your truth in this phase: my wounds can become wisdom.

You may recognize yourself in more than one phase. An anniversary or an unexpected reminder can put you back in Crisis for a week. That is not failure. That is grief.

The Three Dimensions

Time, Space, and Closeness

Every relationship exists in three dimensions. You shared time with the person you love. You occupied physical spaces together. Out of those two things you built closeness.

Death changed Time. The future you expected is not the future you are going to get.
Death changed Space. They are not in the places you shared.
Death did not touch Closeness.

Their love, their influence, their lessons, and their voice in your head are all still yours. Your brain is not broken when it reaches for them. It is remapping two of the three dimensions and keeping the third exactly where it was.

Growth After Loss

G.A.I.N.

Loss caused your pain. Grief is what gives that pain expression while helping you discover what can still grow.

G

G is for Growth. Courage, wisdom, and compassion you did not have before.

A

A is for Adaptation. Learning to live inside changed Time and Space.

I

I is for Integration. Carrying love and loss together in one honest story.

N

N is for New Life. Building something meaningful with their love, not in spite of it.

G.A.I.N. does not make the death good. It does not replace the person and it does not cancel the pain. It simply means loss does not get the final say over what your life becomes.

  • ✓

  • ✓

You are ready to move forward, even slowly, even badly, even half a step at a time.

Before You Enroll

Who This Course Is Not For

I would rather tell you now than take your money.

This is not for you if you are in crisis and need emergency care. Please reach out to a professional or an emergency service where you live. I will still be here afterward.

This is not therapy and it is not a replacement for it. Some people work with me and a licensed professional at the same time, and that is a good combination.

And this is not for someone who wants a place to stay in the pain indefinitely. I will sit with you in it for as long as you need. I am not going to help you build a house there.

What People Say

What People Say

“
When Danny walked me through his 4 phase concept it made so much sense to me. I realized I too had experienced each phase and got stuck many times as I attempted to figure out a way forward on my own. Having a roadmap to identify with just why I was getting stuck was eye opening and frustrating all at the same time. ... Following Danny's faith based approach brought me back to my own faith and helped me understand the way forward is love. I get to love those who I have lost and let them love me forever on my journey.
Glenn
“
When our son died, I was devastated, I was at the lowest point in my life. To suffer such a deep loss tore at my very soul, my very being. ... Danny Couch was my pastor and my friend, he had suffered a great loss in his life, and he helped me to move forward a step at a time, sometimes it was 1/2 a step. He helped me to see that it was okay to live again, the pain and loss would still be there, I would still miss my son, but I could move forward in life. ... 16 years later there are moments when life stands still, and my heart still breaks for my son, but those moments don't last as long as they used to.
Beth
“
He immediately reached out to help me through my grieving. He let me know what I was going through was the normal stages of grief. ... I learned to create a new relationship with my husband, and I've continued to grow ever since.
Ami
“
What I remember most was that Danny didn't try to talk to us. He didn't give advice. He was just being with us. He let us cry. He held us. Amidst our great pain, he was comforting.

A Word About the Price

Many of the people I work with lost half of their household income on the same day they lost the person they love. If the cost is what is standing between you and this course, write to me. We will work it out. I have never let money be the reason someone had to grieve alone, and I am not going to start now.

The Live Calls

You Will Not Be Doing This Alone

The lessons are yours to work through whenever you can manage them. The live Zoom conversations are where the course stops being content and starts being company.

These calls are for course members only. People bring the question they have not been able to say out loud anywhere else. Nobody is required to speak. Some people come for a year and just listen, and that counts.

FAQs

How long do I have access?

Lifetime. You buy it once. Come back to it in five years if that is when you need lesson twenty-two.

How long does the course take?

As long as you need. Some people do a lesson a day. Some do one a week. Some do three in a hard month and none in the next. There is no deadline in grief and there is no deadline in this course.

Do I have to be a Christian to take this course?

No. The course is faith-based and I do not hide that. Scripture and prayer are part of every lesson. I am not going to argue you into anything, and people from a lot of different backgrounds have worked through this material and found it useful. If the faith language is not for you, the framework still is.

Is this therapy?

No. This is grief education and support. I am a grief coach, not a counselor or a therapist. I do not diagnose and I do not treat. Plenty of people work with a licensed professional and with me at the same time, and I think that is a good arrangement.

My loss was years ago. Is it too late?

No. Grief does not expire and neither does this. Some of the people who get the most out of the course lost someone a decade ago and never had anyone give them language for it.

My loss was not a spouse. Will this still fit?

Yes. I lost my wife, and that is the story I tell, but the four phases, the secondary losses, and the Time, Space, and Closeness framework apply to a child, a parent, a sibling, a friend. Grief does not care about the category of the relationship. It cares about the size of the love.

I am outside the United States. Can I take it?

Yes. The course is online and the people in it are all over the world. The live calls are scheduled in Central time and you are welcome at whichever ones you can make.

What if I cannot afford it?

Write to me at [email protected] and tell me. We will work it out.

Can I talk to you before I decide?

Yes, and I would rather you did if you are unsure. Book a free conversation. I am not going to sell you anything on that call.

Closing

The Next Loving Hard Thing

Somewhere in this course I am going to tell you about doing the next loving hard thing. It is hard because grief makes movement feel frightening, exhausting, or disloyal. It is loving because the action cares for your life and honors the person you lost.

You do not have to feel ready. Sometimes motivation follows the action instead of arriving before it.

Signing up for this might be your next loving hard thing. It might not be, and that is all right too. But if you have read this far, something in you is looking for a way forward.

I will meet you there.

With hope, Danny
